AAAS NSW Branch - Ruminant Research Roundup

10th July 2025

Researchers and extension staff from around Wagga Wagga met on July 3rd to pilot a new initiative for AAAS members and other interested participants called “Ruminant Research Roundup”.

The group discussed recent interest in drought-feeding corn as a supplement to sheep – demonstration trials, what is known and some of the potential gaps in knowledge that required further research.

Continuing on the supplementation theme, Michael Campbell, Team Leader Agriculture Extension at Local Land Services, then led the discussion of a paper “Milk production of cows grazing pasture supplemented with grain mixes containing canola meal or corn grain or both over the first 100 days of lactation” (Wright et al 2022) which described an experiment testing the effect on intake and milk yield when canola meal and/or corn is added to the diet of pasture-fed dairy cows.

The next meeting will be held at 12pm on 19th September at the Local Land Services meeting room at Wagga Wagga, with an online option available. Members and non-Members welcome!
